One of my favorite places to photograph is along this stretch of the Central Oregon coast. It is always changing. Often very stormy in February, this happen to be a very calm moment with the sun setting and a single person (my son) watching as the world slowly moved.

Location
The photo was taken at one of my favorite beaches in Yachats Oregon. My grandparents had a home there so as a kid we would come and spend a lot of time at the beach. Now as an adult with my own family we have grown to love the place all over again. It is a beautiful area to photograph with the sky, sea and weather always changing.Time
Knowing how the colors can change quickly with the sun setting, I set up my tripod and camera at the tides edge and watched my son walk back and forth in the cove. While this area of the coast can be very dramatic, this was a rare moment of reflection and calm.Lighting
This was all natural lighting. The increasing areas of dark shadow along the rocks became darker with less detail as the sun and light intensity dropped into the horizon. This allowed the photograph to focus the attention on my son as he too become more of a shadow.Equipment
Canon 6d with Tamron 24-70 lens. Gitzo cabon fiber tripod with Acratech ballhead I also used a graduated hand held filter for the sky Set at 37mm, Shutter at .5 sec, Aperture F18, ISO 100Inspiration
I have loved the ocean and Oregon coast from childhood so always looking to return with my camera. This photo was inspired by the colors in the sky and contrasting dark shadows a sunset provides.Editing
I use Adobe Lightroom to do minor editing to bring out the best in an image. I don't add anything to the image. In this image I did remove some water marks on the lens- that happens at the ocean so always good to be prepared with lens wipes to reduce the work in post processing. In my camera bag
I like to have both zoom and wide angle lenses as I never know what might come up. If weight allows, I like to keep my 70-200 or 100-400 zoom lens attached to the Canon 7DII as it has a cropped frame of 1.6. So a 400mm lens ends up being more like a 640mm lens on a full frame camera. I also like to have my wide angle lens attached to the full frame Canon camera. That is how I got this shot. I also like to take a smaller all around Canon 24-105 lens. I always have a UV filter on the lens and often have a polarizing filter to help with glare and to allow me to slow down the shutter a bit. I also have a hand held graduated filter. I carry lens cleaner, cloth and a little brush for cleaning. I carry a remote release cable to help reduce camera shake when needed.Feedback
It is always best to know as much as possible about the subject your capturing. That goes for people, events, landscape and anything your photographing. For landscape at the ocean- sunsets and sunrises require a bit of location scouting to get a unique shot that maybe others have not been able to get. Having things of interest in the foreground always helps tell the story and offer some scale to your image.
