Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on a Texas back country road while driving home from visiting family in Pleasanton, Texas.

Time

This photo was taken about 1:00 p.m. in the afternoon. As we were driving I couldn't help but notice how beautiful the sky looked and then there was this lonely tree out in this field.

Lighting

The lighting is natural afternoon lighting and it was quite bright out.

Equipment

This was shot with my Canon 6D with 24-105L lens. No other equipment was used.

Inspiration

We were heading home from a weekend trip visiting family. My husband was driving and I was admiring the clouds that day and then we passed by this lonely tree and I asked my husband to turn the car around and go back so I could have another look. I had my camera with me and got out and walked up the hill a little ways and took this shot. The sky was so beautiful, the scene was so surreal to me and I loved the lonely tree out there soaking up all the sun on what was one of the first days of Spring.

Editing

I utilized Photoshop CS5 and Topaz Lens and Topaz Restyle for processing. Topaz products have always been my first go to and I loved the color effect Restyle gave me on this particular shot. It's beautiful in its natural state, but Restyle gave it that extra punch I was looking for to make it a more dramatic shot.

In my camera bag

I normally have my Canon 6D, 24-105L lens as a walk around lens. It's the lens that stays on my camera 70% of the time. I also have a Canon 70-200 F2.8 USM II lens that I use for more portraiture work or wildlife with the 2X extender attached. I always have my Canon EX 430II flash with me as well as my remote shutter release.

Feedback

On this particular shot, I got lucky and came across this on a drive home. What I love about this photo is the simplicity, the color and the organic feel of the photo. I always have my camera with me when I travel and I try to take advantage of these types of moments when I can rather than driving on and not stopping at all. If at all possible, shoot on a tripod which will always result in a sharper photograph. Think about bracketing your shot if the lighting is questionable so that you can merge the shots if need be. When you're looking through your viewfinder think about how you feel at that moment, why you're taking the shot and what you hope to convey in the photograph to others.
