Behind The Lens
Location
I took the photo in my studio with professional Bowens studio flashes and a black background. There was a bit of preparation required as the shot included bodypaint done by using a stencil of a kiss applied all over her with red bodyPaint.Time
It was in the afternoon, and took some time to set up. It was done as a Valentine's day card so the red theme with the kisses and the red wings and the red writing was all in keeping with the concept. We wanted to create an angel in red.Lighting
I used both front and side studio flashes to highlight and contour the body, but also needed to add a hair light to bring her dark hair out against the background.Equipment
It was shot with a canon 5d mark iii with an 85mm f/1.2 L series lens which is my absolute favourite portrait lens, I sed three Bowens studio lights with the key light set to f/8. I also had my big studio fan blowing her hair to give her hair some life.Inspiration
The inspiration was initially a Cupid to symbolise Valentine's Day but it morphed into an angel in red with kisses all over which I thought would be a more modern take on love.Editing
I use Lightroom to post process and mainly adjust contrast and levels. In this case I imported into photoshop to add the writing. In my camera bag
I always have my 85mm f/1.2 L lens for portrait work. I love that lens. It gives very flattering compression and tack sharp focus. I also have my trusty 24-70mm f/2.8 L and 70-300mm f/2.8 L in my bag as well, although I mainly use the long zoom for outside work, not in studio. Plus I have three canon portable flashes I use for location shoots, and a tripod of course and a range of filters including a circular polariser, spare batteries, etc.Feedback
With a shot like this the key is to keep the background black while highlighting the model, so it's all about contouring the lights.
