Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at a private outdoor pool in Tasmania with beautiful reflecting tiles.

Time

The late afternoon light was just gorgeous so I took this with natural light reflected on windows behind me as the pool was shadowed by a wall. This image was taken at 6.15pm.

Lighting

The highlights in her eyes are reflected sunlight in windows that were tight behind me as I took the photo. The lovely soft light came from late afternoon ambient light, in the shadows of a wall.

Equipment

This was shot on my Canon 5D Mark III with an EF24-105mm f/4 L IS USM lens, at the 105mm end and an aperture of f/5 at 1/50s. I was lying down as close to the ground as I could to keep my lens at her eye level, hand held.

Inspiration

I loved working with this model, she has such stunning blue eyes and her look is riveting. I was inspired by the wet look as she emerged from the pool and casually leant against the edge of the pool.

Editing

Apart from enhancing contrast and colour correcting, there is very little post processing in this shot. The focus is tack sharp straight out of the camera and her skin was faultless.

In my camera bag

I always travel with my Canon 5D mark III, EF85mm f/1.2L, EF24-70mm f/2.8L, EF70-200mm f/2.8L, a couple of 600 EX-RT flashes and the usual spare batteries, memory cards, tripod, etc. You never know what you're going to come across. However, if I'm short on space and only going out for a short shoot, I might just bring my EF24-105mm f/4 as my only lens. But when I do that, I mainly shoot landscapes.

Feedback

The light is the key. It was the time of day, the reflected light, being in the right place at the right time. Then it's easy!
