This photo was taken on a vacant lot in Marathon Key, Florida. The yellow in the background was from a street sign. I remember I had to get really low to get a good background. This is one of my all time favorites. I shot it several years ago. It has been featured on a company calendar and also on a greeting card by a card company.Time
I shot this early morningLighting
.No special lighting just the wonderful early morning light.Equipment
This was taken with my old Canon EOS 50D and a 100-400mm lens. I did have it on a tripod that was lowered as low as I could get it. I had to lie in a ditch to be low enough.Inspiration
My love of wildlife. A friend told me about these little burrowing owls and where this family was located. I just had to go see. They are so small. Unless you were looking for them you might miss them. They are only 7.5–9.8 inches tall.Editing
This was a couple of years after I started taking digital photos. At the time I did not shoot in raw, so this was shot jpeg. I did take it to Photoshop and make adjustments like sharpening, levels, etc. It wasn’t long after I shot this that I started shooting everything in raw and now I take all my images to Adobe Raw then Photoshop CC. I can do much more post processing by shooting in raw.In my camera bag
I carry a Canon 7D Mark II which works great with my Canon 500mm f/4 lens + 1.4x. I also carry a Canon 5D Mark III with my Canon 16- 35 f/2.8 lens. I also still carry my Canon 100-400mm lens on times I can’t carry the 500mm. Occasionally I'll pack my Canon 70-200 f/2.8 lens or my 180mm f/3.5 macro lens. My tripod is a Gitzo w/wimberley head. I also pack my Lee big stopper, 0.9 graduated filter, remote control, cleaning cloths and extra batteries.Feedback
All my wildlife shots are captured using a high ISO which gives me a high shutter speed. It’s better to have a little too much noise than have an image that is blurry. You can always use a noise reduction filter. I like to shoot with a large aperture so I can get a shallow depth of field which will blur the background as much as possible. I shoot Al Servo AF with high speed continuous shooting. It takes me lots of continuous shutter releases just to get one good image. I make sure before I shoot I get the best angle so I can get a good background. Wildlife are such creatures of habit. You can watch them and see where they perch and most likely they will come back to that same spot.
