Location
I took this photo at Riverbanks Zoo in Columbia, South Carolina. The flamingos had been nesting and hatching chicks and I went to see them every couple of weeks to follow their progress throughout the summer. Number 51 was my favorite flamingo and she was a great mom.Time
I was there mostly in the afternoons before the end of the day when the chicks were taken indoors to protect them from predators during the night.Lighting
I liked being there later in the day when they weren't in direct sunlight.Equipment
I had just bought a Canon EOS 6D that I was so proud to own. I used a zoom telephoto and a tripod.Inspiration
The birds were beautiful. I had never seen the mud mound-like nests they build before and when I saw the first chick, I was hooked. The flamingos stayed near the fence so I could actually stand fairly close.Editing
I did pretty basic Photo Shop, mostly cropping and a little enhancing. In my camera bag
With my Canon 6D, I have the kit lens it came with, a Canon EF 24-105 mm zoom, a Canon EF 85mm 1:1.8 which is my favorite for portraits and my Canon EF 75-300 mm zoom lens.Feedback
Finding out the routine at any zoo is helpful as is talking to the caretakers if you can. Going back several times can help you figure out the best times of day and lighting.
