Location
This photograph was taken on a private Game Reserve in Namibia, southwestern Africa. The location is not as important as the place and moment I found myself in ... . I anticipated that these Springbok would follow the rest of their herd which was running away. All I had to do was focus on a spot where the sunset dust was golden, and wait for them to cross that spot towards the rest of their herd.Time
I was driving home with my family after a social outing. Not prepared for such a moment, I had minimal equipment and time. Sunset provides fantastic colors, especially if caught up in dust. As I foresaw this moment of action, I got out of my car, grabbed a simple little camera and waited for magic to unfold.Lighting
Sunset light and dust in the air is a fantastic combination. Sunset light on its own is wonderful, but combined with dust particles hanging around and "catching" light, it is transformed into a golden background. This was one of the main attractions within the half a second of time I had.Equipment
Canon Rebel 2Ti. f8. 1/500 sec. exposure with 320 ISO. No flash, no tripod. Just a lot of luck and anticipation that paid off.Inspiration
I served my country for over 16 years within the Namibian Ministry of Environment and Tourism (similar to the US Fish and Wildlife Service). As I dedicated conservationist, it is my duty and extreme pleasure to share wildlife (photography) with the rest of the world with many of its people being unable to appreciate the uniqueness and beauty that unfolds within Nature on a daily basis.Editing
No post-processing. I loved it the way it was.In my camera bag
I normally carry my only camera (Canon Rebel 2Ti), a 50-200 mm Sigma lens and a 150-500 mm Sigma lens with me. Also, a very flimsy tripod ... but it works and serves its purpose.Feedback
Action shots are always beautiful, but blur of motion can rather be tricky. Sometimes one has to compromise. In this case, the dust in the air saved my shot as it "lit up" the air with golden light, making a quicker shot possible. A great tip would be to look for dust at sunset. From there, silhouette photographs come thick and fast.
