“I fell in love with her courage, her sincerity, and her flaming self respect. And it's these things I'd believe in, even if the whole world indulged in wild suspicions that she wasn't all she should be. I love her and it is the beginning of everything.”

Behind The Lens

Location

This photograph was taken at Bellefontaine Cemetery in St. Louis. Bellefontaine is where a lot of notable people are buried, including members of the Busch and Lemp families and William Clark (of the Lewis and Clark expedition).

Time

This was an early afternoon image. This was actually one of the first images from the shoot.

Lighting

In St. Louis shooting outdoors you never know what you are going to get. The sky was a little overcast which made it better for shooting in the afternoon.

Equipment

This one was shot with my 50D. I didn't use a flash, but I used two big reflectors to bring some light onto the subject.

Inspiration

I love vintage photos. I had this idea of having models do a vintage shoot and then a modern shoot in the same place, which is what we did. I wanted this to transcend time and be a real modern vintage portrait that evokes the look and feel of another time.

Editing

Yes. This one required a few conversions. It was turned into a black and white image. Then I used a few textures on it, including a one from the back of an old tin type image to make this look older.

In my camera bag

My 5DMark2 is my go to camera. I keep a 70-200 and a 28-105 with me too. I also carry a Lenbaby. Sometimes I will throw in an old film camera for free lensing. Other than that I have lots of memory cards and extra batteries.

Feedback

To make a portrait look vintage you will need to first figure out a costume for the time period you are wanting. You can rent them or make them. In our case, we rented and the place where we rented had a wonderful selection. You can also use costumes from a few places to get the look you want. For processing you can find various textures, but the more grungy the better the image will look when it's finished.
