Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in the Cherokee National Forest in North Carolina. My family and I had taken a weekend trip to Gatlenburg when we decided to drive over the mountain to Cherokee. As we started up the mountain we were surprised with snow! On our drive, I noticed a sign about a waterfall, so I asked my husband to stop so I could take pictures, of coarse. The waterfall was a little scary to get to with the snow and ice so I opted to take photos of the creek, walking bridge, and my family. This in one of the photos taken that day.

Time

That photo was taken later in the evening, around 4:30 or 5:00 as we had spent most of the day in Gatlenburg.

Lighting

The lighting couldn’t have been better if I had planned it. It was slightly overcast but not cloudy so it took the harsh glare of the Son off the snow, it was great!

Inspiration

The beauty, pure and simple. Standing there listening to the water and taking it all in, it was so serene, such beauty!

Editing

Most landscape photos require quite a bit of post processing but this photo actually required very little.

In my camera bag

I usually carry my extra lenses, 18 mm and 300 mm, and I always have my tripod. I usually carry a microfiber cloth, just in case, and I have extra filters in my bag as well.

Feedback

First, you would have to travel to the area in the winter. Try to go after some heavy rain fall, on an overcast but not cloudy day. It had snowed about 3” earlier in the day and there was very little wind. It was a very pleasant day. I was very fortunate that all of these things came together for a great photo, even if an amateur did take it!
