This photo was taken at the Butterfly Conservatory in Niagara Falls Ontario.Time
Late morning or mid day during the week is the best time to visit as there will be fewer people there.Lighting
The lighting in the Conservatory is fantastic for most shots. In this photo I used a fill flash to bring out the color of the butterflies.Equipment
For this shot I used my Pentax ist dl with my 80 to 320 zoom lens. The exposure was f5.6 at 1/60 and400 ISO. I set my flash to fill.Inspiration
I love the colors in this particular species of butterfly. It wasn't until after I took the shot that I noticed the male and female are similar but different in color.Editing
I did very little post processing past cropping and a little sharpening. In my camera bag
I carry a Pentax K7 with five lenses. Usually I will have my Pentax kit lens, a 100 mm Pentax macro, a 200mm Pentax ff2.8 lens and my two zooms, a Tamron mid range and a Pentax 80 to 320.Feedback
If at all possible visit during the week. There will be fewer people vying for just the right shot. Take just two lenses - a short one and a long one. You are usually able to get right up on top of some of these butterflies for a great shot. Concentrate on the face and use spot metering with spot focus. Set your camera flash to fill before you enter just in case. You walk right into a huge green house filled with tropical plants and thousands of butterflies. Be ready to start shooting as soon as you enter!
