This photo was a set up I did in my back yard In July of 2013.Time
The photo was taken at 4 PMLighting
I am a self taught photographer that started about March 2012 and the interesting thing about this photo is I just heard about the flash blowing out sunlight. I had been experimenting with water drops indoors and really wanted to do something outdoors. In short this is on camera flash in July with 4 PM sunlight in my backyard however I did have partial shade.Equipment
I used a Nikon D7100 with a Tamron 60mm macro lens with on camera flash and manfrotto mkc3-h01 tripod. A zip lock bag with thumb tack. I poked a hole in a zip lock bag and filled with water then used a thumb tack to hold the bag of water above the leaf. The leaf is a Lilac.Inspiration
I was trying to capture water drops for the first time indoors and wanted to get outside and do something outdoors. I knew a water drop on a leaf with flash was a common idea but the fact that I had never tried anything like it and it was all new to me I was excited when I was looking at back of camera I knew I was close to getting a cool photograph. The reality is this is one photo out of 178. Many of the photos were blowing out highlights with the flash on the water but I could see hints of reflection in a few water drops so I kept trying different settings and I got this shot.Editing
I used LIghtroom to processes and crop photo. But this photo is not done in photo shop. The reflection in the photo is 100% real I captured this photo in camera after some trial and error and many shots. The post processing on this photo is actually very little. In my camera bag
Right now my gear consists of. Camera body's Nikon D7100, Nikon D750 Lens, 105mm Nikon, 50mm Nikon, 200-500mm Nikon, 70-300mm Tamron, 24-70mm Tamron I have collected and played with many other pieces of gear that I very seldom use but the above gear I use a lot and I am a 99% percent of the time natural light shooter.Feedback
The main advice I would give is if your thinking of a shot any shot not just this shot in your head its time to stop thinking about it and go do it. Shot set up. Water drip be creative here sprinkler or hose, baggie with a hole in it. Use a tripod get your camera set up and focused be sure and lock focus once its all set up. . Set camera to take photo every X seconds or use a cable shutter release. Get a sense of the timing of the drops and take picture in rhythm with the drops. Play with flash I used on camera flash I had nothing else to try. I would suggest use a speed light or other creative lighting. The important thing is to make your own unique photo be creative take this simple idea and expand on it.
