This was a paintsplash photoshoot that I did with a bunch of friends. She put on this wig, and immediately I wanted to find some gum for her, but all we had was a balloon. Worked out perfectly!

I took this photo in a vacant auto repair shop behind a car dealership that allowed me to use for the day. It had plenty of hose hookups and drains, so making a mess was encouraged.Time
We shot this in the middle of the afternoon, on a very hot summer day. I was sweating the whole time, but my friends seemed to be doing just fine, since they were soaked in water and paint.Lighting
I had 2 Paul C Buff Einsteins pointed at a white vinyl backdrop, and an 84" parabolic umbrella attached to a third PCB Einstein, camera right, as key.Equipment
Canon 5d Mark II Canon 24-70mm F2.8 IIInspiration
I love freezing motion. I bought the Einsteins specifically for that, since I do it a lot! I've seen many paint, powder, water shots and I've noticed most of them are done on a black backdrop(easier) and motion is somewhat blurry due to lack of proper equipment. I had plenty of friends that were also inspired by idea, so that helped. I also made a really cool video of the entire day. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8WPtWEk61mEEditing
The majority of the paint was real, and this specific shot, nothing was composed into the shot.In my camera bag

Do your research! It's not hard, but there are a few technical things you need to know about getting the most out of freezing motion to the finest detail. So many photographers get it wrong, and I didn't want to fall into that trap. Plan out your shots. Plan out your time. These are 2 things I really didn't do, and that cost me a few more awesome shots that I could have done. Be creative!
