Once the place where adults and children could enjoy some of the fun of the sea-side and also the launching area for the local life boat. It also was a place where steamers docked for trips along the Bristol Channel and at one time a ferry service carol the channel to Wales. This is Birnbeck Island that was once reached by the Old Pier at Weston Super Mare. Unfortunately It's now owned by developers who it seems want this marvellous Pier that is a protected structure to rot into the sea, just so they can develop it as exclusive apartments making it a private area that only a select few can enjoy. Fortunately the local council under pressure from conservation groups locally may be about to prevent the developers from doing this. That unfortunately would be only the beginning as then a huge amount of money would need to be raised to restore it anywhere near to it's former Victorian splendour. I hope this happens as I for one have memories of waling does the pier with my father around 55 years ago.
