Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my home studio. Basically our garage that is easily converted into a studio whenever I set up a photoshoot with a model. Once I am done with the shoot, after a brief breakdown and cleanup of my work area, our garage can easily accommodate our car once again.

Time

This image was shot in the evening, but because it was shot in my studio... It really doesn't matter what time of day it was shot because I had 100% control of the lighting setup I would use to accomplish this image.

Lighting

This image was lit with a single Alien Bee Strobe. I also used a foam core reflective board underneath the subject's faces to cast some reflection from the single light source. For the primary source (Cam-R), I used an AB800 with a 45" Octobox Diffuser.

Equipment

For this image, I used a Nikon D700 camera along with a Nikkor 85mm 1.8 lens. The image was shot handheld with active strobes at 200 ISO.

Inspiration

This was a photoshoot for the subject on the left. The theme of our shoot was studio Boudoir. She happened to bring her friend Kate to the shoot with her. Kate wasn't planning to be in front of the camera that day, but there was no way I wasn't going to try to get a few shots of her. As you can see here, my wish came true and I ended up with two 10s in the frame instead of 1. So that is technically where the inspiration came from.

Editing

A little yes. I did some very light blemish removal, and some light dodging and burning. These two are perfect, so even straight out of camera would have been acceptable.

In my camera bag

Right now I am playing with Panasonic gear. I have an old G7 I love, but I recently bought a Lumix S5 with a 20-70mm 2.8 Lumix lens. I really like what Panasonic has been doing lately. I still have a couple of Nikon bodies and glass, but that stuff is catching dust right now -- unfortunately.

Feedback

Soft light in a dark room. You really can't go wrong with those two elements. Color OR black and white! Also... If you are going to have two subjects close together, you will need to get a little creative with your lighting. if you are using a single source, as seen here, you will need to fill shadows at some point. So keeping a reflector handy is always good practice. Move the light around often to find the right look. Don't be afraid to move the light in extreme directions; you never know what kind of magic you can get if you dismiss reasonable logic temporarily. Good luck!
