I took this shot in an empty mansion for sale in Piedmont, CA. Rosa and I spent the entire day shooting there with the owner’s permission. This particular photo was shot in an upstairs bedroom.Time
This was shot midday in front of a loft window facing south.Lighting
Soft midday window lighting. You really can’t go wrong with soft window light.Equipment
Nikon D700 with a 85mm 1.8 Nikkor Lens.Inspiration
The mansion we were in. Literally every turn in that place was a photo op waiting to happen. My subject was very inspiring as well. She is incredibly photogenic and a beautiful young lady.Editing
Yes. Although the image was solid straight out of camera, I did do significant touch up, blemish removal, fly-away hairs, etc. I also did a little dodge and burning and gave the image a green cinematic tone.In my camera bag
Right now I am playing with Panasonic gear. I have an old G7 I love, but I recently bought a Lumix S5 with a 20-70mm 2.8 Lumix lens. I really like what Panasonic has been doing lately. I still have a couple of Nikon bodies and glass, but that stuff is catching dust right now -- unfortunately.Feedback
Window light is easy to come by. And there are so many options when it comes to window light. You can shoot in brash morning sunlight, or red light at dusk, or soft midday light like my image here. Make sure the eyes of your subject are sharp with big beautiful catchlights. And make sure your subject is emotionally versatile to give you beautiful looks like the one pictured here of Rosa. Like I said earlier…. You really can’t go wrong with window light.
