Behind The Lens
Location
I did this self-portrait in my basement studio.Time
I have complete control of the light in the studioLighting
I was looking for a strong light pattern to demonstrate male lighting with a beard. I used two small strip boxes from behind on either side to create a rim light to separate me from the dark background and light smoke. I used a hard light with a grid to light my face.Equipment
I placed my camera a Nikon D850 with a Tanron 90mm macro lens. I attached a Radio remote and set the camera for a 10-second delay. I needed time to place the remote on the table pick up pipe light match fire smoke and pose. I used a Godox X pro remote to fire two Godox speed lights in small strip boxes and a Godox 600 ws studio light with a gris to light face.Inspiration
I was asked to present a Zoom presentation on creative self-portraiture. I needed an old bearded character to model and I am one.Editing
I wanted the image to pop off the background so I used B&W and played with curves in photoshop to add contrast. In my camera bag
I have numerous camera bodies but use my Nikon D850 the most. I have a Nikon 50 1.4 mm lens Tamron Macro 90mm lens Nikon 24-70mm lens Nikon 80=200mm lens and a Tamron 150-600mm Lens. I use Godox lights because they are very portable and inexpensive.Feedback
The thing I like about doing self-portraits is I am always available cheap and I do not require a model release. This is a great way to practice lighting and posing without waisting a model's time.
