Location
The photograph was taken in an aspen forest near Schofield Reservoir in Utah.Time
The image was made in the late afternoon, as the sun was dipping toward the horizon and casting long shadows.Lighting
The natural lighting originally attracted me to the scene.Equipment
The photograph was taken with a Sony RX100 camera, hand-held. This little camera is perfect to slip into a pocket while cross-country skiing.Inspiration
The combination of vertical tree trunks and the long diagonal shadows cast by them was mesmerizing. How could I not take a photo?Editing
I converted the image to black and white and adjusted the contrast a bit in PhotoShop. In my camera bag
I recently bought a Nikon Z7 camera, and it's my current go-to camera. But I also use a Sony A6500 or a Canon EOSM camera when I need to go a little lighter.Feedback
Aspen woods, to me, are one of the most photogenic landscapes there is. This is particularly true when the sun is low in the sky. I'm particularly enamored by aspens in winter, when the leaves are gone and the shapes of the trunks and branches are nakedly exposed.
