Behind The Lens

Location

This image was taken from the pier in our neighborhood on the Lockwood Folly River, in North Carolina.

Time

This was taken at sunset, which I don't often go to because of the mosquitoes and "noseeums" around the river and marsh area. But with the clouds in the sky, I was hoping for a great sunset that evening and took a chance. The sun only lines up at the end of the pier a couple of days a year, so I got lucky in more ways than one!

Lighting

I liked the drama of the marsh grasses silhouetting in front of the sunset. The sunset was one of those rare perfect ones that is both powerful and surreal.

Equipment

Used my Canon 80D with a tripod. I used my Canon 10-18 wide angle lens.

Inspiration

The clouds that were in the sky that evening suggested there might be a great sunset. I was hoping that the pier would line up with the sun and I got lucky that evening!

Editing

I do about 95% of my post processing in Lightroom 6. I shoot everything in RAW, so I do have to process every photo.

In my camera bag

BATTERIES!!! And an extra SD card!! Those are the two most important items. I usually carry my remote trigger, a plastic bag for protecting my camera from wind and sand, a couple of other lenses. Additionally I carry microfiber cloths and a container with about 12 different filters.

Feedback

Watch the sky for the right amount of clouds. If there is a heavy overcast you won't get much of anything. Too little clouds, you just get some glow in the sky. The clouds really make the sunset explode into a dazzling display giving your image not only color but depth!
