Thanks so much Paul. I wish it was a "find," but if you're a photographer in West Virginia, you know about this sight. :)

Thank you for enter this into my Watermills Challenge. Congrats! I've selected this image as the winner for my challenge! Beautiful composition here of a lovely scene. Bonus points for using the true colors of Autumn and using that Tree on the left to naturally frame the image. Love this Mill. Quite iconic indeed! Thanks for your participation!

Behind The Lens

Location

This is taken at Babcock State Park, West Virginia. It's the Glade Creek Grist Mill, an iconic spot for many photographers. Best of all, it has the easiest access of any spot I've ever seen!!

Time

We were there just as the sun was starting to set, around 4:30 in the afternoon.

Lighting

As I had never been here before, I didn't know much about the lighting or the position of the building. A better time to go would be to catch the morning light so it would be lighting up the mill. Next time! :)

Equipment

I was using my Canon 600D with my Canon 10-18 lens, mounted on a tripod for a 1 second exposure.

Inspiration

Living in West Virginia, you see photographs of this spot everywhere. I'd always wanted to try shooting this myself. I loved the whole park. There are so many great angles you can shoot the mill from.

Editing

I process 98% of my photos in Lightroom 6. I only use Elements when I have something like layers to do. Lightroom is fast and easy! The autumn colors were a bit on the dull side, so I boosted them just a little.

In my camera bag

I now have a Canon 80D that I carry, along with a variety of filters. The lenses I carry, depends on where I plan on shooting. I usually have my wide-angle lens, my kit lens, my macro and my 300 mm. It seems if I leave a lens behind, I always regret it later! I also carry my remote trigger, about 5 batteries, and in cold weather, I carry my lens muff with heat packs. And I never leave home without a tripod!

Feedback

Use a slow shutter speed for the silky water and an ND filter if it is a bright day to allow for longer shutter speed. Try the shot from a variety of angles.
