Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my family room on a very grey day in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. I am slowly becoming more confident in my photography and this turned out better than my initial expectations.

Time

This was taken at around 10:00 am, the sky was so grey, the rain had just stopped falling. It was the bright, indirect light shining in from the windows which captured his face perfectly.

Lighting

I didn't have any additional lighting for this shot, only the light streaming in from the windows to the side of Jasper and directly behind him. All of the lights in my family room were off.

Equipment

I shot this on a Nikon D7200. Aperture 24/5 ISO 500 Shutter 1/100 Focal Length 112/1

Inspiration

Jasper loves to sit on the back of our couch and watch the birds on the feeder outside. He sat up to stretch and then just started staring at me very intently. I was actually in the midst of photographing the feeder birds when I turned my camera on him instead!

Editing

This photo is one of the first images with which I taught myself how to use Affinity Photo. It was a simple subject matter but it really helped me become comfortable with the concept of post-production. I changed the photo to b/w and used a masking effect to reveal only Jasper's beautiful eyes. It took a great deal of time and steady hand to ensure that only his eyes revealed color. In real life, he's a bright orange tabby.

In my camera bag

I have two cameras that I use - the Nikon D7200 and small Panasonic Lumix LX100 with Leica Lens. In my backpack, I have Vivitar lens filters, cleaning cloths, mini-tripod, an extra pair of socks and an empty container that I actually use to keep small rocks, shells or other nature objects I find interesting on my journeys.

Feedback

Patience is a virtue and having an open mind is key. Just when you may be intent on photographing one thing, another opportunity may present itself. Be willing to go where nature and its inhabitants take you. Even the most simple subject matter can contain new, creative possibilities.
