Behind The Lens

Location

The basic photo was taken in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The fire and smoke shots were taken in my backyard.

Time

The original shot was taken in the late afternoon, and is a shot I like on it's own.

Lighting

Shoot at the ends of the day (blue and gold hours) for good color and to keep from having to deal with blown out highlights. I prefer shooting black and white images on overcast days to get better detail throughout the range of values.

Equipment

I shoot with a Canon EOS Rebel with an 18-135 zoom lens. I always shoot with available light. I hate using a flash.

Inspiration

Originally the beautiful afternoon light. Obviously that's not what the photo is about now. The inspiration for the composited image was to create a visual story using the shot.

Editing

This was a compositing demo I constructed for my raster-based Imaging students to teach them how to change a day shot to a night shot and how to add in atmospheric effects and "light emitters" like fire.. Many of my students go on to be matte painters for the movie industry so they need to know how to "create the fantasy.".

In my camera bag

Not much. My camera and a tripod. Most of the time I don't even have my bag with me. For me, it's less about the equipment and more about my "eye."

Feedback

Keep the rules of composition in mind when you shoot, and always follow the light. If you are going to composite, use good quality source images, and don't use other source images without permission. Try to tell a story if you can, or at least suggest one. Beauty is great, but story is even better!
