Behind The Lens

Location

Herbalists hands was taken at Mountain Gardens, a botanical garden of useful plants at the foot of the Black Mountains in Western NC.

Time

Taken at mid-day, the worst time for nicely balanced tones. I was fortunate enough to catch Joe's hands in filtered light under the trees.

Lighting

Sometimes you don't get a choice about when you can get a shot. Even if the light isn't great, try anyway.

Equipment

Canon EOS Rebel 18-135 mm lens

Inspiration

Herbalist Joe Hollis himself was an inspiration, not only visually. I took several photos of him as we toured the gardens. He gave us a great education on useful plants.

Editing

Even with the filtered light, I still had to edit it a bit to bring down some of the contrast and beef up detail in the hot spots.

In my camera bag

Just my camera usually, without the bag. Sometimes I have my tripod.

Feedback

Just keep watching for that moment and have your camera ready.
