I had spent a significant amount of time shooting in the direction of the sunset, only to turn around and realize that the gem of this whole collection was just behind me. Nature had decided to give us the most beautiful light show during golden hour.

I shot this photo in my rural home of Nyakach, near Kisumu, Kenya.Time
I took this photo in the evening, at golden hour. While we were on holiday in 2019, I decide to take my camera and went for a short walk with my sister. There was a good mix of evening light and moody clouds rolling in at around 6.45 p.m.Lighting
The sunset was very beautiful, but I got this image shooting with my back to the sunset. Because it was a run and gun type of photo walk, I only used natural light for this photo.Equipment
This photo was shot using a Nikon D3300, and a 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G lens. I did not use any extra equipment.Inspiration
As a portrait shooter, I really do not get much of a chance to shoot landscapes. Therefore, on a trip to my rural home, I decided to go on a random photo walk and see what images I can capture. Since it was around golden hour, I spent a significant amount of time shooting into the sun. When I thought I had done all the best I could, I turned around to head back home. This was the sight I was met with! I had to readjust my settings quickly, because the clouds were moving, so I only had a little time. Took three different images with different compositions, and this one turned out to be the best of the bunch.Editing
The colors in the photo are actually as captured! For this image, I only did some very light post-processing. I always try to keep my images as naturally looking as possible, because this is how I saw them when taking the picture. I reduced noise, lifted the shadows in the trees, and made the colors a bit more vibrant. In my camera bag
In my camera bag, I usually have my camera, a Nikon D3300 with the kit lens, an extra battery, and a shotgun mic that I use when I want to capture videos.Feedback
Although I spent a lot of time shooting into the sunset, thinking that is where I will get the best photo, I did nit realize that it was slowly materializing behind me. If I had continued, I would have easily missed the shot behind me. To me, this shows me how easy it is to spend some much time trying to do something that most people believe would work, but the only thing that would work for you is following the path that leads you home to your passion. The opportunities might just be waiting for you on this path.
