Behind The Lens
Location
In New Bern, North Carolina outside of their City Hall. They had a plot filled with the largest Sunflowers I had ever seen. Sadly, during Hurricane Florence, they were destroyed and have not been replaced since.Time
It was in the middle of the morning, before the sun became too unbearably hot.Lighting
New Bern has been known for their beautiful "Carolina Blue" skies, and this May day was no different. Since it was mid-morning, the sun was at a perfect angle to provide the lighting.Equipment
I used an 80 mm crystal orb as a prop and my nikon D5300 camera. Due to the sunny nature of the moment, there was no need for a flash.Inspiration
New Bern is filled with beautiful and historical photo-opportunities, so I was driving around downtown looking for places to photograph. As soon as I saw the sunflowers, I knew it was the perfect chance to try out my new prop.Editing
There was nothing outside of the simple and standard tweaks. In my camera bag
I have a large camera bag that has my tripod, wide-angle lens, portrait lens, kit lenses, 80-300 sigma lens, cleaning supplies, crystal orb, and my Nikon D5300. Due to size of the bag, I have a smaller bag that I take with me containing only the lenses needed.Feedback
Don't be afraid to experiment. If using a crystal orb, even the smallest things can become grand photos. Just be careful - due the magnification aspect, it can burn you if in the sun. Try out different lenses and different angles. The same photo taken several times can prove to produce fantastic results.
