Here is (now departed) Blue Bayou's first bud, just beginning to emerge. This bud was at the very top of a 4' high stalk. Dahlias come in every color imaginable, except for blue. This variety is supposedly the closest to blue of any dahlia (though it looks more like a gorgeous shade of purple to me).

I love Dahlias - have not grown them for a few years - I was living in a different city then - a bit south of us. My biggest problem was blight on the leaves, however I think my Hubby (another life) used to use the sprinkler over that garden. I don't get water on the petals, always water just the soil so I don't attract the sun to the rest of the flower. We get really hot here as well in the summer.

Oh, Gail, I'm constantly fighting mildew and moving the pots around multiple times a day has wreaked havoc on my hands and back. But they are SO beautiful and just love them so much!

in all it's simplicity and that one rightsize petal of vigorous purple, this photo is beautiful in every way, Sue.
