Location
This shot was taken in the old Alexander Keith's Brewery in downtown Halifax. Surrounding us was a lively market. This stall was vacant and we made the most of it. On that day it was a downpour outside. We had a few locations planned, but the weather was so bad we stayed in the market for the whole shoot.Time
Approximately 11:00 am. The location was deep in the basement with no natural light. The market was bustling with people behind me but Elisabet White (subject) did a phenomenal job of composing herself for this series of shots. She is a Dancer in Halifax, and we were in the middle a shoot for her portfolio.Lighting
There are three spotlights in the space that I utilize to create mood and drama. I did not use a flash in this shot as I wanted to maintain the contrast and positioned them close to Elisabet to ensure there was enough light on the subject.Equipment
I used my Canon 6D, and a Sigma 18-35mm 3.5 lens.Inspiration
The industrial vibe this space has was striking to me. The crooked floor, the cast iron pipe, the monochrome like colors. This image really speaks to my personal aesthetic in photography. I prefer images that are flawed and imperfect, keeping details in the image like the water stains on the wall and paint that is chipping. The cast iron pipe worked as a prop and focused a number of poses around it.Editing
I use Lightroom to do my post-processing. I focused on getting a good contrast between the darks and light and ensured Elisabet's skin tone was not blown out in the highlights. In my camera bag
For every shoot, I bring my Canon 6D, Sigma 50mm 1.4, Sigma 18-35mm 3.5, and some select vintage lenses like my Tokina 28mm 2.8, Canon 430Ex Speedlight, macro extension tubes, spare battery and spare cards. Instead of a traditional camera bag, I use an insert in a vintage brown leather satchel. Still as daunting and heavy, but more conspicuous than your classic carry bag.Feedback
The success of this shot is all thanks to Elisabet. most people would not be willing to lye on a cast iron pipe in a bustling market wearing nothing but a dance leotard. Amazing imagery is not just the responsibility of the photographer. This is coming from the standpoint of a portrait photographer after working with many different personalities and lifestyles. Typically images that make an impression to the viewer will be those that your subject has made just as much of an effort as the photographer.
