Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in the middle of Finnish woods in the beginning of December. In the session we had two German shepherds and two handlers.

Time

In December there is mostly darkness in Finland, so this kind of a outdoor photo shoot must be done around noon. There is daylight only for few hours.

Lighting

I was planning to use flash, and I did, but during the photoshoot I got a idea to use very wide aperture and only daylight. I wanted to have a photo where the dog is the only main thing in the photo.

Equipment

This photo was taken with Nikon D810 and Sigma 35mm 1.4 ART

Inspiration

Finnish independence day definitely! This photo was in my mind earlier, as I knew this girl who works for Finnish army as a dog trainer so I wanted to use them as models. The dog is actually not being aggressive in this photo. I'm throwing snowballs for her and she's trying to catch them.

Editing

Editing in this photo is quite little. The wide aperture gave me the "edit" that I wanted, so basically I only needed to bring the raw file to live!

In my camera bag

In my bag I have two Nikon cameras, D810 and D800. Mostly I use Nikkor 85mm 1.4 and Nikkor 24-70mm 2.8 OR Sigma 35mm 1.4 ART I also have few flashes with me and Tamron 70-200mm zoom lense (which I would love to update soon!)

Feedback

Knowing the dogs behavior is the main thing in dog photography. So make sure the dog understand what he/she is asked for. Here in this photo the dog is not aggressive. I'm throwing the snowballs for her and she loves it!
