Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken midwinter here in Alaska, Peter's Creek is a gorgeous spot for landscapes and portraits that time of year.

Time

It was a couple of hours before sunset when I took this photo, so about two-thirty or three. I had been staying with a friend of mine that day and we debated staying indoors because it was around -10 below.

Lighting

The lighting right before sunset is wonderful in the winter time. You have to make sure you don't miss that window though because light fades very quickly here during that time of year.

Equipment

This photo was shot with my Canon 50d and my favorite lens, 28-135mm.

Inspiration

I noticed the frost clinging to the bridge, which only happens during extremely cold temperatures, and thought it would look awesome as a kind of frame around the water.

Editing

I always edit my photos in photoshop, with this image I adjusted the lighting (brightness, contrast, highlights and shadows) and made the colors ore vibrant.

In my camera bag

I usually carry my camera, three lenses, memory cards, some filters and always extra batteries.

Feedback

Anyone trying to capture raw beauty really need to focus on what they define as beautiful. I may not notice the same things that others do. For example, take two incredible photographers to the same shoot and tell them to only shoot one object, then look at their photos. The differences will be mind blowing. Every photographer sees things drastically different than the other. The thing that cripples many of us is the fact that we try to recreate content instead of making an image truly our own.
