Behind The Lens

Location

This was shot in Vancouver just outside the model’s townhouse. In the distance is a much larger park.

Time

This was shot in the evening but not quite golden hour.

Lighting

i didn’t use flash because I was shooting multiple shots at high speed and the flash can’t recycle fast enough to catch all the shots.

Equipment

Camera was handheld Canon 5D Mark III. Lens was Tamron 70-200mm f2.8 with a UV filter.

Inspiration

Actually started as a silly shoot to get some fun photos for his online dating profile but we started playing around with his dog’s toy ball and ended up getting this incredible shot.

Editing

The warm tones and glow from the ball were mostly achieved in photoshop and the smaller specs of sunlight were added in Lightroom. The ball was actually solid blue so it was easy to manipulate the colour and lightness of it to get the glowing effect.

In my camera bag

For portraits I usually carry my Canon 5D mark III and 2 or 3 lenses. The Tamron 24-70mm f2.8, the Tamron 70-200mm f2.8, and sometimes a prime lens like the Canon 85mm f1.8. I’ll have at least one Canon 600Ex-rt Speedlite, often just mounted on camera. I use reflectors and a grey card sometimes too.

Let your imagination run wild! We didn’t set out to achieve this shot but I saw its full potential once I got it into the editing room. He was up to something magical that I had to enhance!
