Location
This photo was taken at Cap St. Jaques, a regional park in Montreal, Quebec.Time
I set out one lovely summer evening and I took photos until the sun set.Lighting
There was some cloud coverage, making it a kind of grey sunset, however, I like that it's beautiful but not sweet, it's quiet, a bit dark, and introspective.Equipment
This was shot on a Canon 5D Mark II with a 35-70mm. No flash, no tripod.Inspiration
I was just starting back to work as a photographer after having a couple of kids. I was feeling uninspired and a friend recommended I shoot something that I wanted. Something for fun, something that could ignite the passion back to my photos. This is what I did.Editing
Not much post-precessing. I converted the image to black and white and worked to make sure I had a full zone system while maintaining the mood of the image. In my camera bag
Canon 5D mark II, 35-70mm IS, 70-200mm IS F2.8, 50mm /2.4mm, 100mm macro. Polarizers, and Metz flash.Feedback
The trick about shooting dancers is that it's about more than a pose or movement. There has to be something behind just the dance, some emotion, the thing that makes a dancer an artist. So while you have to keep up with the pose, the technique and the artistry of the dancer, you also have to pay attention to the scene around and the relationship to the dancer you are working with. In this case, I wanted the dancer to have a softness, an organic quality to the movement to reflect the smooth and calm water.
