Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in Mackinaw City, MI in February the coldest part of winter in Michigan.

Time

It was taken at 9:44 pm. I was at home and looked outside and noticed it was a clear night so I decided to go out and take some pics of the bridge.

Lighting

There was not too much lighting except for the lights on the bridge. So I found the right spot with the most amount of lighting to were snow and ice was seen in the picture and it worked out pretty good.

Equipment

Equipment used was a Nikon D3300 camera 18-140mm lens and a Manfrotto tripod. (Which I purchased on eBay at a very good price)

Inspiration

The Mackinac Bridge is a very popular tourist attraction in Michigan and most of the photos are taking in the day time and some at night. But of all the photos I've seen of the bridge very few were taken in the winter at night. So that's when I thought to myself why not take some pictures at night in the winter time. So I did!

Editing

There was some post-processing to lighten up the snow and ice below the bridge. I use Corel Paintshop Pro for my photo editing and always use the latest version.

In my camera bag

Most of the time it's my Nikon D7200 and D7100 bodies with the Nikon 18-140mm lens, Tokina 11-16mm wide angle and 100mm macro lens. Along with that I always carry extra batteries, memory cards, water bottle, headlamp/flashlight, compass and a good tripod.

Feedback

A lot of people asked how I took the picture. My number one response is I learned how to use the camera and all of it's different settings. Along with a lot of experimenting and trail & error. Too many people I see with DSLR cameras have them set to AUTOMATIC setting. I'm still learning something new every time I take pictures that's why I love photography!
