Surrounded by fortified walls, the medieval fortress was commenced in 1299 by king Haakon V Magnusson, after Earl Alv Erlingsson had attacked and burned down Oslo.


Taken from Margaretasalen, in the north wing of the castle, you can view from the right: The Romerike wing, The Chancery Wing, with the dark passage, The South Wing, the Blue tower, and what's left of the old medieval main tower of Våghalsen and the East Wing.
