Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Lyon (France) on the banks of the Rhone and next to the Lafayette bridge.

Time

This photo was taken on January 1, 2016 at 18:24. This day was beautiful with a beautiful weather and we had a beautiful sunset. At the time of the picture, we were at the end of the blue hour.

Lighting

In fact, my good idea was to showcase the new lighting at Lafayette Bridge and use reflections in the water. In addition, I tried to integrate the lighting of the city.

Equipment

I used a Canon EOS70D with a Sigma 17-70 (17mn) on a tripod. Here I did not use ND filter. Indeed, there was very little current on the water and I am already at 10s of exposure time.

Inspiration

Here I wanted to highlight the lighting of the bridge and the reflections on the water. In addition, I wanted that the look starting from the bridge arrives at last end on the symbol of the city of Lyon, ie the basin of Fourvière in the background

Editing

Yes. This photo was taken in RAW. I started by treating - as always - the photo in lightroom. I turned the photo into B / W and set the colors. Then, I adjusted the tones in 2nd to well put values in the lights of the bridge and its reflections in the water. Finally, I try to clear the buildings on the other side. I also slightly decrease the noise and increased the sharpness. I finally went into photoshop with a dynamic object and I then pause the tones using layers.

In my camera bag

In my bag, I have 2 boxes EOS 70D with mounted on a sigma 17-70 and a barrel 10-22. I also have all my filters (ND round and system lee filter). I also have my remote controls for long poses. Then, important for me, I always have material to clean my optics, as well as spare accessories (batteries, batteries, ...). Following the spots, I also take other optics such as my 18-135 gun, the 70-200 f2.8 and the 70-300. After that, I always take a tripod. Depending on the case, I take a small in case of long walk (manfrotto bee-free carbon) or a large Vangard. On the other hand, on each, there is a manfrotto head.

Feedback

I love to spot the shooting locations before I get there. For this, I have a particular technique that is to do it by doing my jogging. It allows me to make between 15 and 20km and to go everywhere. So I often stop to take notes on my phone and watch the shooting possibilities. Then, at home, I report GPS points on my PC to watch the position of the sun on these spots. Then I always arrive very early on the scene. It allows me to adjust the devices well and sometimes to have pleasant suprises on the beautiful lights that I had not planned. But, the main thing is in all cases to look good. Whether it is to compose, but also to find THE light that goes well.
