I took this photo in Puerto Natales on our early morning drive back to Punta Arenas from the Torres Del Paine national park.Time
We'd left Torres Del Paine well before sunrise in order to get back for our flight but as I stopped for petrol in Puerto Natales I couldn't resist this shot as the sun was just starting to creep over the mountains. Unfortunately my camera had other plans - I had lost the charger in a hotel in Punta Arenas and after 3 days in the national park the battery was all but dead. I managed to set the camera up for the shot and then it died. There was just enough juice left to flick it on and take the shot - good job I didn't need a second chance. I couldn't view the photo until two days later when I got a new charger in Cusco, Peru.Lighting
The sun still wasn't up when we arrive in Puerto Natales but I has spotted the broken pier on the way into town. I left my fiancée asleep in the car and waited for the sun to start coming up - it was definitely worth the wait with the beautiful reds creeping into the sky.Equipment
My tripod was safely stowed away in my luggage so, not wanting to disturb my fiancée, I found a handily located fence post nearby - it must have been built for the job! This was shot on my old Sony Alpha A200 - happily retired now, it never let me down.Inspiration
I'd spotted the pier on our first trip into Puerto Natales on the way to the park but it was the middle of the day and the lighting just wasn't right. I couldn't have been happier when I saw the perfect opportunity on our return journey.Editing
I corrected the auto-White balance to make sure the beautiful sun rise was properly reflected in the shot and adjusted the exposure and contrast slightly on the foreground to bring out the details of the pier.In my camera bag
I've recently upgraded to a Nikon D5500 which is perfect for travelling; lightweight and compact whilst carrying a decent spec. I also love my Hoya N1000 filter - there's something fascinating about being able to take long exposure shots in the middle of the day to capture movement in the scene. I'm also a big fan of my 35mm f1.8 lens; it's lightweight and adaptable to most situations with an excellent aperture for astrophotographyFeedback
Timing is everything. If I'd have captured the shy the first time, when the lighting was all wrong, it wouldn't have garnered any attention. Having the patience to wait and get the perfect shot is what's needed to capture beautiful landscapes.
