Location
I took this photo in the dining room of a quaint little cottage me and some friends were staying in. As they were there I thought I'd take the opportunity to take pictures of their eyes as it was a project I was working on.Time
This was taken mid afternoon the sun was the otherside of the house so the light from the window wasn't too bright.Lighting
I like to use natural light as much as possible. with macro photography you need plenty of light but it is easy to over expose and with eyes you easily get a reflection of the surroundings. I used the light from the window to highlight the colour in the eye but took it from an angle where the reflection of the window didn't show in the eye and cover the detail.Equipment
I used my Canon 600d with a Sigma 105mm mcro lens on a tripod.Inspiration
I have always been fascinated with eyes and the detail. I was doing a course at the time and chose macro as my subject. I had experimented with water droplets but ultimately chose eyes. I also tried getting in closer with extension tubes and showing the reflections of the surroundings but the detail of the iris won it for me.Editing
I enhanced the colour slighty, cropped the picture to enlarge the detail and sharpened it a little. In my camera bag
I take everything, all my lenses, spare batteries and cleaning gear cos you never know.Feedback
A true macro lens is important for quality and clarity but improvisation with reversing rings can work if money is an issue. A tripod is essential, as it is close work there is a shallow depth of field and things go out of focus easily, especially if they're of the human kind that breath and blink. I had the aperture open to its fullest, and the lens zoomed right in as far as it can go. I moved the camera rather than the focus. Finally learn what you can from others and use that knowledge, experiment and use whats best for you. Above all have patience and perseverance and enjoy the adventure.
