Location
I took this photo right in front of my computer, pointing the lense at the monitor. However, this is a composite of several photos. The sunset is from Medora, North Dakota. The crow is from Detroit Lakes, Minnesota. It was running along the water line at the beach of Lake Detroit. I photoshopped the crow into the sunset and already had a nice photo. Then I purchased a crystal ball. So, the crow on the sunset was on my computer monitor and the ball was laying in front of it. Then, I spent some time finding the right perspective and took the shot.Time
Sunset: dawn Crow: afternoonLighting
There was no special lightening for the crow. Just a nice day with a blue sky. The sunset was with clear air and nice colors. I took a few shots at different settings and then picked the best one.Equipment
I don't remember which camera I took the shot with, probably Lumix Panasonic. The compositions is digital art from multiple pieces.Inspiration
I liked all photos individually. I was looking to play with Photoshop and searched for suitable photos. This was for a crow themed show in Fargo. I had the crow pic first and then produced 4 composites with different backgrounds. My friends liked this one best. The crystal ball was another layer of composition. Most of this was experimental, I did not have a specific outcome in my mind, I just went along with the creative process and stopped when I had a product I liked.Editing

Of course, the first thing is the camera. What I currently use but was not used for the featured photo is a Sony RX10, which has all sorts of interesting wild life features, such as birds in flight. I have a raincoat for the camera, so weather does not have to slow me down. When photographing wild life, you need a bunch of things you can not pack, such as time, patience, practice, being ready quickly if needed, knowledge about the wildlife, etc. Occasionally, I use a tripod, but I feel that often this would slow me down.Feedback
I practice wildlife photography at the local Zoo. This is much easier, as the animals can't run away. But you still get a feeling for the character of the animals and what kind of 'life' you want to capture. Once you know your camera and won't have to try 5 different settings for an animal that is in the business of running away, you are ready to go larger. Like a state or national park. If time permits, I start with a distance photo first and then zoom in on the animal. This way, I get a feeling for the surrounding, as well as a nicely focused picture of the animal.
