Behind The Lens

Location

I am asked more often how I got to take this photo. I took it towards the end of winter at the Red River Zoo in Fargo, North Dakota. The six wolves were all laying around lazily, but suddenly jumped up and gave me this concert. It was a lot of fun to watch and listen.

Time

The photo was taken during the afternoon. I was taking photos for a show at North Dakota State University featuring Fargo and decided for the zoo, assuming that everybody else would walk down Broadway. It turned out a good choice, given the activity level of the wolves that afternoon. I spent about an hour with the pack and learned quite a bit about wolf behavior.

Lighting

I do not think the lighting was special in any ways. There was an overcast and it was rather grey. The grey does fit with the fur of the wolf, though.

Equipment

The photo was shot with a Canon Powershot SX50 HS, at an aperture of f/5, 150 ISO, a shutter speed of 1/125 and a focal length of18532/1000.

Inspiration

I am a biologist and like everything that is alive, more so if it is wild as well. The wolves were amazing that day. They were running around, howling for some 15 min. Their habitat is reasonably large for a zoo and you get to see some good behavior. I just kept shooting and this was the best pic.

Editing

I removed a bit of fence with Adobe Photoshop Elements 13.

In my camera bag

The most important thing is the camera, obviously. Then, I always have a very small tripod that one can put on the car or a wall. If I pack more, I have a set of UV and other filters, as well as macro lenses up to 10x. I like to take macros of flowers, especially when butterflies are around. I do have a larger tripod to be used on the floor for landscaping pics.

Feedback

For me, the most important thing to take good animal photos is to know something about the animals. I would have a hard time taking photos of the wild horses in Theodore Roosevelt National Park if I did not even know how and where to find them. Then, patience always pays out. Don't hope for the one perfect shot in 5 min. Try the unusual. Not everybody would go to the zoo when asked to bring back city photos.
