Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in the Financial District of Osaka, Japan. I was running to the train station heading for Kyoto when this stunning bank caught my eye. I dropped my luggage and grabbed my closest camera (cell phone) to snap a picture.

Time

With the bright blue sky and the rays of the sun beating down during lunchtime, I snapped this photo in Osaka. The bank was situated on the corner of the street and welcomed the warm sun, which highlighted the lines on the building.

Lighting

The shadows and highlights from the sun created a strong impact of the lines from the layout of the stones. I only took advantage of what nature provided.

Equipment

I used my iPhone 6 to capture this photo. It was the closest thing I could grab while running for the train station.

Inspiration

I can’t say that I was intending on taking photos at that moment. I had my hands full with luggage and trying to navigate the map to find the train station in Osaka. Luckily, the crosswalk light was red and as I looked up, I was taken aback from the captivating lines on the architecture of the bank. I dropped my luggage and walked to the corner of the street to search out the perfect angle of the lines along the sides and the top of the building.

Editing

I really don’t like to edit my photos that much. Usually just small tweaks here and there. In this photo, I simply changed it to black and white. Although the weather was brilliant and the color of the building looked great against the blue sky, I wanted the focus to be on the mesmerizing lines on this building.

In my camera bag

I am truly an amateur photographer and my bag only consists of a Sony point and shoot camera or my iPhone. Maybe it's time I made the investment?

Feedback

Use and trust your instinct. There is a reason that whatever you are trying to capture caught your eye. In my case, it stopped me dead in my tracks. And, taking great photos doesn't mean that you have to have that fancy camera and editing software. I captured this using my cell phone and selecting the black and white feature. This might be a lucky shot, but I find it inspiring and it's one of my favorites. Capturing architecture is all about the angle.
