Behind The Lens

Location

In a small, Belgium village near the river meuse. Once a beautiful "grand hotel", became this place a more interesting sort of building for more; Decayed rooms, stairs and this wonderful former dancing hall.

Time

After a long trip through Belgium, we arrived at 4-5 pm in the spring time - so we must be fast at the dwindling light of the day.

Lighting

The light from above and the great contrast in this room, made it nearly impossible to capture all the details in one shot with an digital camera. So, i need to trick a little with 3-5 captures, which i sqeezed into one 32 Bit Tiff File and made the best out of it.

Equipment

My trusted Canon EOS 6D with the Samyang 14mm 2.8, mounted on a Manfrotto M410 head, with a Giottos Tripod. Nothing else. Metering by the cam.

Inspiration

The atmosphere of the room, the lightning of it and all his colors, guided me to this image. A centered perspective was at this moment the only way, to capture all the feelings, colors and imaginations, which the room gave me.

Editing

Well, as i mentioned before: 3-5 bracketed shoots, put together in Adobe Photoshop to a 32 Bit Tiff File, which i processed later in Adobe Lightroom to capture the needed informations in the highlights and shadows. After this, the Color FX filter from the NIK Collection, together with Viveza did the rest on the colorsetting. Small sharpenings in the end and finished.

In my camera bag

On my normal tours, i travel light: A small, cheap bag from Bestek, which can handle one Body, one extra Lens and all the little fuzz, you carry with you. My Canon 6D, with a 24-70mm 2.8 VC USD Tamron attached to it and my loved 135mm F2 L Lens from Canon. Sometimes, i take the 14mm 2.8 Lens also with me.

Feedback

Take your time with a location, walk around, don't be hasty and "feel" the room, the building, the light. Nothing kills inspiration and an the needed "eye" like haste, and a ticking clock. If you don't have the time - don't go on tour. It will be wasted with bad results and you get depressed about it later. That's all about a nice pic - time.
