Behind The Lens

Location

I live in Central Alberta and we are fortunate enough to see aurora quite often. Luckily for me this barn is only about 3/4 of a mile from my home.

Time

Aurora chasers are night owls...we have to be. This photo was taken about 1:30 am

Lighting

This was a long exposure so no lighting off camera

Equipment

I use a manfrotto tripod with a Canon 5D MkIII and my lens is a 16-35 Tokina 2.8 A great lens for night photography! I also ALWAYS use a Canon wired shutter release.

Inspiration

This is my Husbands grandmothers barn. There are a lot of memories for him of time spent with his grandparents on their farm. I was hoping to be able to take a picture for the family to have that was memorable. I have tried a few times to capture aurora behind it but this time it really popped!

Editing

I will play a bit with clarity and shadows but what you see is what you get typically.

In my camera bag

I always carry extra batteries and memory cards. For aurora shooting it is typically cold or cooler as it is middle of the night shooting so your batteries tend to not last as long. For cold weather winter shooting I use a Camera Parka designed by my friends/fellow photographers and this accessory definitely makes my long cold nights shooting easier on my camera and extends my battery life

Feedback

Practice practice practice...I have learned so much over the past couple of years about night photography. Wide angle lens are best I find to really capture more sky. A shutter release really helps but you can also use a timer if you don't have one. You need to have your lens focused on Infinity so you have focus from front to back in your picture. Play around with different ISO and exposure times...Make sure you have Hot chocolate or coffee...and be prepared to be addicted once you start...it gets your adrenaline pumping every time you see the lights!!
