Location
This photos is one in a set of photos I took for a very special family. It was for the dad's birthday. It was taken at a Heritage village called Botshabelo about 120km from me near the town of Middelburg, Mpumalanga in South Africa. The site makes for a incredible backdrop for old style images. The location fitted in perfectly with the look the mom wanted the dad's surprise gift.Time
This image was taken about 15h40 - early afternoon. Sun starting to make shadows in between the old buildings and big trees. Making for nice deep shadow areas.Lighting
I like to use fill-in flash 99.9% of the times to liven the eyes, and help making the subject stand out more or to soften harsh shadows on the face. In this image the flash increased the shadow depth in the background also.Equipment
Used my old trusty Canon EOS20D with the 24-135mm Canon lens. Also used the Canon 580EX Speedlight.Inspiration
The kids and the setting was just so inspiring.Editing
This image lend it perfectly to go totally monochrome, and in this case I wanted a little pastel selective color left just for that extra depth. In my camera bag
Lately I take my Canon EOS70D as my main camera and the EOS60D for a backup, just in case. I use the Tamron 24-80 F2.8 as my main lens and have the Tamron 70-200 F2.8 for the longer shots where I want extremely shallow depth of field look. Always take my Canon speedlight with.Feedback
Old buildings, fallen trees make a perfect setting for old classic feel images. And what I love about old building settings is that you just turn from one angle to the next and you can have a total different backdrop. Always have your speedlight with you as the shadows of buildings can be a problem sometimes and fill-in flash help your subject stand out and soften the harshness. Depending on the look you want to create offcourse.
