Location
The image was taken in the Etosha National Park in Namibia. In the winter months water is scares, and animals survive by travelling to a small amount of waterholes, spread across the National Park. The main characteristic is that of a salt pan so large it can be seen from space. In the winter months the park is a wasteland of white dust, and it is this time that great photographs can be taken at the waterholes, all you need is patience and of course just a little bit of luck.Time
To get the great image I am always out and about before sunrise, and this image was take at 07:36am. Been winter the sun was still low in the sky and casting a lovely colour and creating an amazing mirror image in the still water.Lighting
As most experienced photographers will tell you, morning and evening light is the best time to take wildlife photographs.Equipment
I always have 2 camera bodies with me, on this occasion my Nikon D800 and Nikon D3S. For this photo I used the D3S with a Nikon 70-200mm F2.8 lens. I also used a 2 x Convertor to give me additional focal length of 400mm. Camera settings F5.7, ISO 3200 and 1/800. No additional equipment was used.Inspiration
My love for nature, and just waiting for the right moment, to get the composition just right, and off course the great feeling when all this comes together and the visualization becomes a perfect image.Editing
I do use Adobe LR to do any post- processing. On this image only a crop and small amount of sharpening was doneIn my camera bag
To be a wildlife photography normally means travelling, which means light weight, particularly when flying to destinations in Africa. My normal setup, would be 3 Nikon bodies D3S, D810 and D4S. Lenses Nikon 400mm F2.8, Nikon 600mm F4 and Nikon 80-400mm F4.5/F5.6 - 1.4, 1.7 and 2.0 convertors, SB800 flash and a carbon fiber tripod. And let us not forget pouch full of memory cards.Feedback
Wildlife Photography calls for an understanding of animal behavior and lots and lots of patience. One will in all probability identify a location, be it a waterhole or river, setup and wait and see what happens. It is not unusual to wait for hours to get a decent image.
