Behind The Lens

Location

As we cruised the icy waters of the high Canadian Artic along the east coast of Baffin Island we spotted in the distance a Polar bear making his way across the abstract puddled ice fields. We were on the bow of a 300 foot expedition ship as the ship slowly inched its way towards the Polar Bear which was spotted about 3 miles away.

Time

We found this bear in the early afternoon with the sun high in the sky filtered by some light cloud cover.

Lighting

We had bright slightly overcast skies creating very even lighting.

Equipment

I was using a Nikon D4 with a Nikkor 200-400mm f4 lens with a 1.4x tele-converter, giving me an equivalent of 550mm, I use aperture priority set to f10 with ISO 640, at 1/1000sec and +.7 EVs to whiten the snow. I also used a monopod to help stabilize the shot.

Inspiration

We were exploring the ice floes off the coast of Baffin Island Canada specifically looking for Polar Bears on the ice. The puddles on the ice made for some excellent reflections surrounded by an abstract of colors and shapes.

Editing

Some basic cropping, levels, white balance and saturation

In my camera bag

On photo trips I usually have two full frame camera bodies (Nikon D750 and D4). I can then have one body as a telephoto and the other with a wide angle. For lenses my go to medium telephoto is a Nikkor 70-200mm f2.8. My longer telephoto is a Nikkor 200-400f4. I also carry a 1.4x tele-converter which I try to avoid using as it softens the resolution a little. For wide angle my day to day lens is a Nikkor 24-120f4, but I also carry a Nikkor 16-35mm and sometimes a 10mm fisheye. You will also always find two Go Pros and a Nikon mirrorless V1 for my pocket camera. While on the ship I often use a monopod and on land a tripod.

Feedback

When cruising the ice fields of the arctic you never know what you might come across. On trips like this you will often find me out on the bow of the ship looking for subjects. I find a small corner of the ship to set up a pelican case with my equipment and accessories kind of like a portable office. That enables me to select the right equipment for the subject and conditions.
