Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in a creek in Caledonia State park in Franklin County Pennsylvania. I had just gotten out of college and was wanting to recreate my favorite scene from a movie.

Time

This was taken sometime in the afternoon on July 8th, 2014. I wanted to make sure the sun wasn't harsh and the water would be warm. We ventured into one of the deepest parts of the creek that was shaded though the water was a bit cooler than I wanted.

Lighting

I wanted this image to be solely lit by soft natural light that just gave her a glow. We were under tree canopies that gave us shade but also details that you can see in the water.

Equipment

This was shot on a Nikon d7000 with a nikon 35 mm lens.

Inspiration

I was inspired to take this by a scene in the movie 'Oh Brother Where Art thou'. The scene was of either water nymphs or maids cleaning in white dresses in the river. I purchased the dress at a thrift store for the sole purpose of a vintage dress.

Editing

Once the shoot was over I placed all the images into lightroom and did some basic edits ( exposure, clarity, noise reduction,) and then went through and processed it in photoshop using a gold/warm overlay and darkened her makeup and eyebrows while bringing out the blue into her eyes.

In my camera bag

The first thing I always pack in my bag are my 2 Nikon d7000 bodies along with my prized 35mm and 24-70 lenses. I also pack my vello transmitter and receiver to go with my Nikon sb700. On the outside compartments there are my extra batteries, my light meter and business cards. Attached to my strap of my bag is my Roundflash ring light that straps onto my camera.

Feedback

I'd try and shoot on the warmest day possible for the water will run warmer. Make sure there is something for your model to rest on (there was a large stone sitting right underneath her so she could rest her back on it). I let my model wrap one of her arms around my leg so that she wouldn't float away so make sure there is something they can grab onto. And do as many different shots as you think; this one was in the middle of what I shot that day and you never know when you just get that shot. Good Luck
