Location
I took this photo at the Santa Barbara Zoo in Southern California. Normally, fairy penguins are hard to capture during the daylight in the wild, because they are in the ocean feeding on small fish. Thankfully, the Zoo has an exhibit to show why these animals should be protected in the wild.Time
I took this photo around midday, which is notoriously a difficult time to shoot. You can tell the time of day in the way the beak's shadow is almost directly underneath the beak.Lighting
The lighting was tricky in this shot due to the harshness of the midday sun. Thankfully, that day was foggy, so the light was diffused enough for photography.Equipment
I used a Nikon D3300, Aperture f/8?ISO 100?Shutter 1/200?Focal Length 2000/10Inspiration
At the time, we had moved back to Santa Barbara, California after living in Australia. We missed the Australian flora and fauna and made an effort to visit all of the Aussie animals at the zoo. I love the expression on the penguin's face.Editing
I used lightroom to brighten it and add some contrast. In my camera bag
I normally carry my Nikon D3300, macro lens, telephoto lens, and wide-angle lens. The macro is very heavy, so if I'm hiking, I sometimes take it out.Feedback
The best advice is to always have your camera with you. At the minimum, have an iPhone so you can take advantage of wildlife when they make themselves known.
