This male spotted deer was spotted in Kanha National Park in Madhya Pradesh, India. Majestic pose of this beautiful animal fascinated me. Capturing this majestic pose was challenging because of harsh sunlight in the wrong direction. Distance of the animal did not allow fill-in flash for lighting animal's front. Handheld DSLR was used with a 70-300 mm telephoto zoom.

Excellent work, especially taken into the light. But look at the light on the grass, just wonderful

Location
This beautiful male spotted deer with velvety antlers, majestically posing in the midst of shining golden grass, was captured at Kanha National Park located near Jabalpur in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh.Time
It was 8.19 AM (Indian Standard Time) on 11th March 2012.Lighting
The shot was taken in natural light. Flash could not be used to light the subject due to its distance.Harsh lighting condition with strong sun in wrong direction, however, made the grass shine and look golden. This added a special flavour to the image, enhancing its appeal.Equipment
Handheld DSLR (Canon EOS 550D) was used with a professional telephoto zoom (Canon EF 70-300 mm f/4-5.6 L IS USM). The lens was fitted with a UV filter. Tripod, flash, shutter-release were not used.Inspiration
After travelling a long distance by road, our first jeep-safari in Kanha National Park in the evening was disappointing as no tiger could be sighted. The next jeep-safari in the morning, however, was rewarding as we came across this spotted male deer at a distance. It appeared that the deer was showing off his velvety antlers while sticking out his tongue to tease. Majestic pose of the beautiful deer in the midst of shining golden grass was truly inspiring.Editing
I have done very simple photo-edit using Picasa. In my camera bag
Besides my Canon DSLR (EOS 550D until December 2015 and EOS 7D Mark II later), I pack my favourite telephoto zoom: Canon EF 70-300 mm f/4-5.6 L IS USM for wildlife photography; Canon EF-S 10-22 mm f/3.5-4.5 mm USM for wide-angle photography; Canon EF 100 mm f/2.8 L IS USM for macro photography; Canon EF-S 18-55 mm f/3.5-5.6 IS as general purpose lens on 550D; Canon EF-S 15-85 mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM as general purpose lens on 7D Mark II. I also carry Canon 50 mm f/1.8 STM prime lens, the lens cleaning kit and a set of Circular Polarizing, Neutral Density and Graded Neutral Density Filters in my Nova 190 AW Lowepro Bag.Feedback
Photo opportunity can strike anytime. We have to be ready and patient to discover it. Initially I was discouraged with difficult lighting conditions with strong sun in wrong direction. Brightly lit grass, looking golden yellow, however, fascinated me to go ahead. Medium aperture of f/8 was used to capture the main subject in some details with the background grass not too blurred. High speed of 1/500 second eliminated the risk of camera-shake even at the focal length of 300 mm without a tripod. It also safeguarded against blurring due to any possible movement of the subject.
