This fascinating natural phenomenon of seed-propagation was captured just in time at Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary in Kerala, India. This ripe & dry pod was just opening to release its flight-worthy seeds for traveling with the flowing wind for plant-multiplication. Handheld DSLR was used with a 70-300 mm telephoto zoom.

This shot of an amazing natural phenomenon: 'Seed Dispersal through Wind' was captured in Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary at Thekkady in the Indian state of Kerala.Time
It was well before sunset at 1815 hrs (Indian Standard Time) on April 7, 2012 when I was returning from my Guided Nature-Walk in the sanctuary.Lighting
Natural light was used. Higher ISO speed of 800 was used to obtain1/500 sec exposure (at F-stop: f/5; Focal length: 124 mm; Exposure bias: 0 step) to freeze the movement of flight-worthy seeds being carried away by the wind.Equipment
Handheld DSLR (Canon EOS 550D) was used with a professional telephoto zoom (Canon EF 70-300 mm f/4-5.6 L IS USM). The lens was fitted with a UV filter. Tripod, flash, shutter-release were not used.Inspiration
While returning to my cottage in the sanctuary, I noticed a ripe & dry seedpod of Milkweed crack opening to release its flight-worthy seeds. Amazing natural phenomenon of 'Seed Dispersal through Wind' inspired me to capture this shot. I was lucky to be in the right place at the right time.Editing
I have done very simple photo-edit using Picasa. In my camera bag
Besides my Canon DSLR (EOS 550D until December 2015 and 7D Mark II later), I pack my favorite telephoto zoom: Canon EF 70-300 mm f/4-5.6 L IS USM for wildlife photography; Canon EF-S 10-22 mm f/3.5-4.5 mm USM for wide-angle photography; Canon EF 100 mm f/2.8 L IS USM for macro photography; Canon EF-S 18-55 mm f/3.5-5.6 IS as general purpose lens on 550D; Canon EF-S 15-85 mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM as general purpose lens on 7D Mark II. I also carry Canon 50 mm f/1.8 STM prime lens, the lens cleaning kit and a set of Circular Polarizing, Neural Density and Graded Neutral Density Filters in my Nova 190 AW Lowepro Bag.Feedback
More often than not, simple & ordinary objects can make extraordinary pictures, provided some associated events are captured therewith. We need to be attentive and ready for capturing such events. In this case, an ordinary seedpod could make a fascinating picture because of capturing the opening of seedpod and the flight of its seeds.
