The one and only, the legend of Sand Wash. Following him over the years and watching his life unfold last year from afar was a little heartbreaking. As a human, even though I own horses and know better, we tend to project our human emotions onto horses-animals. I believe they hurt, grieve, feel lonesome, but on a different level that you or I cannot understand...only try to. So to see a once heroic, powerful, majestic stallion maintain control of his herd for years and then loose them so quickly to younger stallions; stallions that in his older age he is no match for (although he can still hold his own if need be), and then start his journey onward as a bachelor stallion...a life he had not lived for so many years was heartbreaking to say the least. I was grateful to find him and spend a very short amount of alone time with him. An emotional time for me, because what I saw was him at peace! He was confident and comfortable and still as majestic as he has always been. The two birds in this picture were following him as he went along, they would land at his feet when he stopped and as soon as he moved they would be right behind him waiting again to be at his feet. Maybe it is just me being 'overly'-emotional (I am known for that), but I knew he was not alone, he had companions to see him on his journey and every so often he would glance back at me as if to say 'Move along lady, I've got this...I'm okay, you can go now'! Once again he is ruling Sand Wash, on his own terms and he is at peace!

This is my daughters photo, (one of many) her back story to this helps set the scene. The back story and sacrifice of Angela's being able to make this trip has humbled me. She is a gifted photographer and an amazing spirit.
