Behind The Lens

Location

The Background is the Foggy bottom Train Station in Washington DC, and is a HDR Background to the composite of me sitting on the edge of my couch at home! The image was up on my TV and positioned myself so the angle angle and composition matched the background.

Time

All by accident the lighting of the subject in the portrait was matched almost immediately to the background. I had left my white balance on shady by mistake and when i saw what i had, i couldn't have been happier with the connection.

Lighting

I had the most fun "painting in the shadow around my feet to corrolate with the overhead beam of light that is clearly shining over the bench itself. I learned a lot about light falloff and light angles during the creation of this image. Painting shadows was new to me, but i'd say it was well worth it!

Equipment

The image was shot with a tripod, using remote trigger control, the expression i captured was too perfect to pass up! I know you guys must know how important expression is when doing a portrait, especially a vintage type shot that this would end up being... All in all, the best equipment used in this whole concept was, lets be honest, is the HAT!! i was working in a pub in northern England and someone left it behind on a frog "butler" statue in the main lobby and never came back for it...it says made in Scotland inside....enough said.

Inspiration

I was challenged to create a composite image in my digital imaging class and i made this one. After which, it was judged by Joel Grimes in a class wide contest, in which i won. I went t Photoshop World in vegas that semester to receive a signed copy of one of his highly coveted composite portraits "Jessica" and it hangs on my wall now!

Editing

Absolutely. The blending of light and shadow was a must before this image could be called complete. I shot myself with one exposure and created a shadow highlight effect to my suit, cloned out the face, allowing the Suit to become HDR, of sorts, leaving my face fairly smooth and clean.

In my camera bag

I normally have my Macro Tubes and Cannon t3I and it';s standard lens along with another 250m telephoto lens. Tripod is a must, although on a light painting excursion last week, i slipped on some ice and destroyed it. I am a full time student and have no way to replace it at this time, so i'm really depressed deep down, but hide it well by being steady enough to get results with a hand held!!

Feedback

Something i learned from Joel Grimes was to always be aware of the chance to capture a facinating Background, and find a subject that was meant to go there. I have had a hard time going anywhere since that morsel of wisdom because i sometime don't pay attention to whats in front of me, looking for that next great background for a composite. Advice? look for the "MONEY" shots, but not at the expense of the train coming down the track behind you!! haha
