Behind The Lens

Location

On the Black Mountains above Abertillery, in Gwent South Wales, so called because of pat mining activity

Time

The time of day was mid afternoon.

Lighting

The lighting was very changeable, with dark snow clouds coming over the valley in the background. A gap in the clouds caused a light area around the sheep. As I took the photograph, they all looked up to see what I was doing. Close by is the Church of St Illtyd, a 6th century church, and a pass into the valleys which was first used by man just after the ice age.

Equipment

I used a Cannon 7D with 15-85 mm lens at 85mm. F6.3 at 1/2000's , ISO 640

Inspiration

The bleakness of the situation, where animals in freezing conditions relied on the farmer to feed them. Animals reliant on man for food, man reliant on animals for food.

Editing

I combined two photos one light and one dark on Photoshop CS5 to pick up the detail and to add depth to the photograph.

In my camera bag

Normally just use the Cannon 7D with an assortment of lenses such as a 100m Macro, 85 to 400 mm zoom and a couple of other standard lens.

Feedback

Mainly, just be patient and take lots of photos, experiment with different f readings and wait for the right moment.
